The decision

These tools overlap at text to speech and voice cloning, but they start from different jobs. ElevenLabs starts with speech. Descript starts with recorded media and its transcript.

Choose ElevenLabs for the voice itself

ElevenLabs makes more sense for narration, audiobooks, character work, multilingual dubbing and products that generate speech through an API. You can move from a creator workflow to a developer integration without changing companies.

Its weakness is cost visibility. Credits are shared across generation work, and repeated takes can make a short project consume more than its final duration suggests. Test a difficult part of the real script before choosing a plan.

Choose Descript for the complete edit

Descript connects the transcript to the audio and video timeline. You can cut a recording by editing text, clean the sound, create clips and use an AI version of your own voice to repair a line. That is a better workflow when the final deliverable is an episode or video rather than a folder of generated audio.

Descript is a poor-value purchase when text to speech is the only requirement. Its plans cover a larger editing system, and AI voice features share credits with other AI tools.

A fair test before paying

  1. Use the same 30-second script in both tools.
  2. In Descript, place the voice inside a real edit instead of exporting it alone.
  3. Make one script correction after the first output.
  4. Compare the time to the final video or episode, not only the first voice generation.

ElevenLabs

Choose ElevenLabs when voice quality and room to expand matter more than having the simplest editor. Start with a real script from your project, not a polished demo sentence.

Descript

Choose Descript when the generated voice needs to end up inside a podcast or video edit. Buying it only for text to speech leaves most of the product unused.
